Match Report for the YDL Younger Age Group. Sat 21st May 2016
The first of our younger age group YDL competitions was held in Royal Leamington Spa last weekend and saw eight of our younger athletes compete and compete they did! Every single one of them gave it their all, some achieving new PB’s, some trying new events for the very first time! All of them represented their club brilliantly.
With so few athletes it was unlikely that we were going to score well against the other eight clubs; however, we were not last and scored in total 193 points.
The day began with George Whinney’s debut performance for the club, bravely announcing that he was sure that he wanted to compete in the 75m hurdles, having never tried this event before! After picking Head Coach Ian, off the floor, he led him away for a quick training session, happy that he was capable of doing the race safely, George competed and being the only athlete in the race came home first, scoring maximum points for the club! Well done George and we look forward to seeing you training with Ian before the next competition.
The 100m sprint was popular with five athletes competing in the 100 meters; a notable performance was from Jordan Seetul-Drew setting a PB of 12.9. Holly Hunt and Ella-Rose Hobday competed in the 150m, with Holly setting a new PB and Ella-Rose trying this event for the first time and getting a respectable time of 27.7. Sprinter Amy Hunt put in some very respectable times in the 100 and 200 winning them both comfortably and she also achieved a PB in the discus putting her in third place.
Harry, George and Ronnie represented the U13 boys and competed hard against some tough competition showing grit and determination, I look forward to seeing them all compete through the rest of the season. A special mention to Ronnie who despite being poorly earlier in the week, still competed, even though he was not at his best – Great Spirit Ronnie!
U15 Isabel Hobday’s best performance of the day was in the 1500m achieving second place, improving her PB by 17 seconds, well done Isabel.
So over all a great day, with great performances and some great benchmarks set for the rest of the season. Special thanks to coaches Caroline and Ian and of course all the parents who supported their children and volunteered for official duties.
The next YDL is on Sunday 19th June at Grantham where I really hope we will see more of the younger athletes supporting their club and putting all those training hours to good use. If you are unsure about competing speak to the athletes that where at Leamington and they can tell you what it’s really like, how much fun they had and how many free sweets they got!
The signup sheet is on the notice board or you can sign up via the web site. We really do need you.
Huge thanks again to all the athletes that competed at Leamington, for your huge smiles and bags of enthusiasm. I am looking forward to our next competition.
Joanna.
